Flying schools in Canada

Flying schools in Canada come in all shapes and sizes, from small local flying clubs to university departments offering aviation degrees and diplomas.

Students wanting to pursue a career in the aviation industry can follow a fairly fixed education path whereby they must gain a private pilot licence and then add to this with various other qualifications. Ratings, such as flight instructor, multi-engine, night and instrument, give students the skills to fly a wider variety of planes in a range of conditions while also building up their flying hours which is essential for progression to higher levels of qualifications in this field.

Students can choose the ratings that they undertake based on their own individual interests, with the most daring choosing ratings such as aerobatics.

All students must undergo a Category 1 Aviation Medical in order to obtain a student pilot permit, which ensures that they are medically fit to withstand the rigours of flying an aeroplane. Students can have this completed in their own country if it is a contracting state of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) or by an aviation medical examiner designated by the Civil Aviation Austhority (CAA). Canadian flying schools can only send out a letter of acceptance – needed when applying for a student visa – when they receive an enrolling student's student pilot permit and medical certificate issued by Transport Canada.

Most flying schools in Canada are members of the Air Transport Association of Canada which promotes professional standards and sound business practices.
