The STM Star Awards contenders 2012

With only a few weeks to go until this year’s STM Star Awards, the prime red carpet event of the industry calendar, votes have been counted and preparations are well under way. Claire Twyman talks to the shortlisters about what it means to be nominated.

After eight solid weeks of voting, the time has come to reveal the nominees of The STM Star Awards 2012. The event will celebrate its seventh birthday on September 1 at the prestigious London Hilton on Park Lane hotel, and the ceremony is set to be a knockout. Hundreds of study abroad professionals will join us in recognising quality service in the industry, and, of course, to let their hair down after 12 months of hard work.

As always, competition has proven tight, with thousands of votes cast worldwide. Read on for the low down on the 2012 finalists.

North America
The bar has been set high in North America, with both of 2011’s Super Stars coming from the region (see page 50). But this year, Tamwood International College in Canada is a strong contender, with a grand total of three nominations: STM Star English Language School North America, STM Star Junior Course for under 18s and STM Star Work Experience Provider (Go International). “It feels wonderful to be shortlisted in three categories,” reveals Tamsin Plaxton.

Among the repeat nominees are those making a debut appearance, including Canada’s Latitude Travel, which is up for the STM Star New Agency award. Jeanette Kramer is “pleasantly surprised to be shortlisted – elated and encouraged by the support! There are few Canadian agents, so perhaps the industry recognises the effort made to develop this market and to encourage young Canadians to take advantage of the study and work abroad opportunities available,” she says. Last year’s winner of the category was All About Languages in the USA, up for the STM Star Agency North America award in 2012. “What an honour to be nominated for an STM Star Award for a second consecutive year!” exclaims Lawrence Morello. “Being nominated tells us we are in good standing with our partners.”

Latin America
Across the border, North America’s Latin cousin also has promising offerings, with Central and South American institutions accounting for 40 per cent of nominees in the LTM Star Spanish Language School category. According to Nicolás Molina of Coined International in Argentina, Chile and Guatemala, “The nomination proves that cooperation with our partners creates the most successful team, making it possible for thousands of students to engage in intercultural experiences in Spanish across Latin America. We are truly honoured to be shortlisted for the second time.”

Expanish in Argentina joins Coined International in the same category, and is not a first-time contender either. Commenting on why he thinks the school was nominated, Jascha Drel says, “It’s because we strive to be the best in what we do. [The nomination] proves we are doing the correct thing: providing high-quality and fun classes.”

Latin American organisations have a strong presence in other categories too, with CI in Brazil receiving a STM Star Agency Latin America nomination four years in a row, having won the title in 2007. “It’s great to be shortlisted again,” reports Tereza Fulfaro. “It certainly is the result of teamwork, and fuels our vibrant staff to keep working hard. We are grateful for receiving such recognition from partner organisations – it motivates CI to keep investing in our niche market and improve mutual cooperation!”

Western Europe
Across the North Atlantic Ocean, many Western European nominees are very keen to express their gratitude. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” says Kim Kluckhohn from Humboldt Institut in Germany, in the STM Star German Language School category. “Apart from voting for us, we really appreciate all your hard work.”

Meanwhile, Andrew Roper from British Study Centres, UK, which appears in STM Star English Language School Europe and STM Star Junior Course for under 18s categories, recognises that “both categories are ultra-competitive – a huge cheer went up in the office when the news came through! The STM Star Awards have become highly sought-after by everyone in the language travel industry, a true badge of honour.”

And the region’s agent nominees are as thrilled as their educator counterparts, with Claudio Cesarano from globo-study Sprachreisen in Switzerland revealing that the agency’s nomination in the STM Star Agency Western Europe section “makes us feel proud and it is an incredible feedback from our partners that have voted for us and given us their trust”. Likewise, Krister Weidenhielm from ESL – Language Studies Abroad in Switzerland, up for the same award, says, “As always, we warmly thank our partners who voted for us.”

Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa
Eastern European nominees come from far stretches of the region, from Russia to Turkey. Student Agency from the Czech Republic is among the STM Star Agency Eastern Europe shortlisters, and for Nada Malkova the nomination feels especially rewarding. “After re-joining the team this spring, after a four-year break, I could hardly look for better motivation for building up what my foregoers started in such an enthusiastic way,” Malkova explains.

Among other shortlisters in this category is Turkish agency, Idealist Education Consultancy. Onur Yaldizkaya says, “We are so proud to have been nominated...this nomination reflects our partners’ satisfaction with our agency.”

And for Eren Goker from UED in Turkey, up for STM Star Agency Association, the nomination has special meaning. “In our comparatively short history, UED has always worked to create a higher standard for the Turkish sector by ensuring the best service is provided for Turkish students,” Goker says. “Therefore, we believe this nomination is the outcome of hard work and continuous efforts to provide the best service as a family.”

Education Journey in Saudi Arabia is among organisations competing in the STM Star Agency Middle East and Africa section. And in a similar vein, Ali Alhomidi says,“When we received the mail telling us we have been selected, we felt that our hard work [had] been recognised globally.”

Asia
For Japanese contenders, the nominations have special resonance after last year’s tragic earthquake. The knock-on effects were felt in the industry, with inbound international student numbers falling due to fears of a repeat incident.

This is a point that Yukiko Inoue from ISI Japanese Language School in Japan, STM Star World Language School nominee, relates to. “The number of foreigners dropped to almost half of the numbers we used to have last year,” Inoue says. But, on a more positive note, “We are so delighted to hear that we have been nominated – I would like to thank all the agents who voted. It is our third [nomination] since 2008. We have tried to do whatever we can think of to let international students feel they are safe and continue their study in Japan.”

In the same category, KAI Japanese School in Japan has also “been working hard all year long after the tragic earthquake in March 2011”, according to Tae Yamaguchi. “Being shortlisted for the award gives us the courage to continue our endeavours. We are deeply grateful to all the agents who voted [for] us, as well as [to Study Travel Magazine] for [creating] this award,” Yamaguchi affirms.
Also from Japan, Ryugaku Journal’s Miki Harada feels “very honoured to be chosen for seven consecutive years” in the STM Star Agency Asia 2012 category. “We celebrated our 40th anniversary last year so we feel increasingly grateful for all our partner schools that supported us through thick and thin.”

Australasia
Heading south, there is a mixed bag of nominees from Australasia. Among the major players, English Australia has been shortlisted in the STM Star School Association category, and Sue Blundell informs, “It is fantastic to see that agents value the work we do.”

Canada’s Guard.me, current Super Star, won the STM Star Insurance Provider section five times, but this year New Zealand’s Unicare is hoping to win the title. “It is an honour to be shortlisted – we are delighted,” says Margaret Ranum. “We hope our clients have voted for us because they appreciate the quality protection UniCare policies provide.”

And among the first-time contenders, Australian Institute of Professional Education (AIPE), is appearing in the STM Star English Language School Southern Hemisphere category and the STM Star Vocational College category that launched last year. “We’re a very professional team, so it feels wonderful that our efforts have been recognised,” relates Amjad Khanche.

International
Last but not least are the nominees that provide services to all regions of the world. “Everyone at ILSC is thrilled to be shortlisted for STM’s Star Chain School 2012 Award,” reports Paul Schroeder from ILSC Education Group, which also appears in the STM Star Work Experience Provider category. “We have been shortlisted in the past number of years and we are pleased that our educational partners have supported us as we have opened schools in new destinations – Australia and India – thus qualifying for the Star Chain School Award.”

Kaplan International College has made a first-time appearance in the STM Star Junior Course for under 18s category, and Neil Harvey relates, “I can only say how delighted we are. I believe being shortlisted in the category is a real tribute to the diligence, care and enthusiasm of our junior programmes team.”

Finally, commenting on EC’s nomination in the STM Star Chain School category and EC Malta’s appearance in the STM Star Junior Course for under 18s section, Mike Xuereb explains the secret to the school’s success. “Besides our very competent and dedicated team of sales, marketing and admissions people, I believe that the secret of our success is our ability to regularly listen to our agent’s feedback and to act on it immediately,” he relates.

The ceremony
Winners of the 2012 STM Star Awards will be revealed at a lavish awards ceremony on September 1 at the Hilton Park Lane, London. Whether you narrowly missed the shortlist this time, are a first-time nominee or a previous winner, we would love to see you there.

Super Star Hall of Fame

In 2011, not one but two organisations were inducted into the STM Super Star Hall of Fame having won their respective categories an impressive five times – the maximum any one company can win an award. Canada’s International Language Academy of Canada (Ilac) won the title in the STM Star English School North America category, and Jonathan Kolber revealed that the win was down to the hard work and dedication of his staff, teachers and students. Meanwhile Guard.me, an international insurance company with branch offices in Brazil, the UK, Australia and Canada was awarded the STM Star Insurance Provider for the fifth time. “When our name was announced my colleagues and I were all very excited and honoured,” enthused Keith Segal. “To be awarded the [STM] Super Star Award is especially gratifying.”

Indeed, the Super Star Hall of Fame aims to honour and preserve, for all time, those who have excelled in the field of education and services provision.
