The American film industry has proliferated every aspect of society around the world, so anyone interested in film and filmmaking will find something of interest in the programme,” enthuses Andrew Green, Director of Kings Colleges, about the English plus Film Studies and Filmmaking course in Los Angeles. Some classes are taken at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (ADMA), where “students have the opportunity to learn all aspects of film studies and filmmaking, including screenplay writing, direction, production, acting, camera fundamentals, and editing right in the heart of the industry Hollywood”, advises Green.
The course, which so far has attracted students from Taiwan, France, Belgium, Korea and Japan, enables students to take classes with screenwriters, actors and film producers who are currently working on projects in and around LA.
For students of a more melodic persuasion, Kings Colleges offer English plus Music on the campus of Pine Manor College in Boston. During the 12-week course students learn English in the context of music, and expand musical knowledge and skills, “culminating in the opportunity to produce and execute a live or recorded performance”, informs Green. The current instructor is a graduate of the famous Berklee College of Music, he adds, and Boston is a magnet for top musical performers.
Staying on a musical theme, Zoni Language Centers help students find their rhythm with an English plus Dance programme in New York. Lyssol Garcia, Marketing Manager, explains, “Zoni, in collaboration with Steps on Broadway, one of the oldest and most well known dance studios in New York City, offers this great opportunity for hopeful and professional dancers to develop their language and artistic skills.” A range of dance styles and levels are catered to, and Garcia adds that the minimum four-week course has been very popular with short-term European students.
ILSC San Francisco has developed a range of plus courses that use the country itself as the key plus element. Mara Muller says that the English on the Road course “provides students with the opportunity to complete two or more weeks of language study, followed by adventures and exploration of famous sites, cities and landscapes around California and neighbouring states”, and that students can use their newly acquired language skills. Alternatively, Muller adds, “In the English through San Francisco course, students explore San Francisco’s eclectic neighbourhoods and most popular landmarks at the same time as they enhance their knowledge of everyday colloquial English to communicate more easily with native speakers.” ILSC also provide an English Through Yoga programme, where students learn to follow basic instructions while mastering the vocabulary of anatomy and movement.
In the junior market, Anglophiles Academic offer a unique English and Disney course where, explains Gavin Daniel, students join the Disney Youth Education Series programmes and partake in a range of workshops including Disney’s World of Physics, Disney’s Ocean Discoveries, and Disney’s Production Arts and Sciences. “A truly amazing opportunity of a lifetime to go behind the scenes at the world’s most famous and magical attraction park!”
In New York and Miami, Rennert International has been developing a range of offerings for its Art plus English programme, including Dance, Fashion, Music, Photography, Culinary Arts, Filmmaking, Acting and Make-up Artistry. Executive Vice President, Eimear Harrison, advises, “Rennert’s Art plus English programme expands upon its strengths as a creative school and the fact New York and Miami are both destinations that attract students who are interested in culture, fashion, media and the arts.” She adds that students will benefit from instructors with impressive experience in their fields, while the English teachers support in creating relevant schedules. The courses have broad appeal, but the fashion programme, run in partnership with LIM College of Fashion, has been very popular in Brazil, Turkey, the Netherlands and Japan.
English plus is a sector that is growing and evolving, and Harrison advises courses reflect demand. “Through extensive participation in international marketing fairs, Rennert keeps abreast of trends and needs in the market. After market research, for example, we determined that there was demand for Make-Up Artistry and English, which we introduced two years ago.” Green notes that for Kings Colleges, while the music course is a new addition, “This summer promises to be very busy with young students taking English Plus Film.”
