Observations
The countries that are most reliant on agencies for recruiting their international students are New Zealand, Malta, Australia and Ireland. Almost all the destinations in our Status survey had increased their agent usage in 2007, compared with the previous year. The biggest increase in agent usage was found in the USA and Australia, with the number of students recruited via this method increasing by 14 percentage points over the previous year in both countries (see LTM, March 08, page 57). South Africa too showed a large increase in this area, with student recruitment via agents increasing by 13 percentage points over the previous year.
The cost of studying in various destinations around the world had changed somewhat in 2007 compared with 2006, with Ireland now the most expensive destination, in US$ terms, overtaking the UK which was in second position. South Africa had also become more expensive, up from last position to seventh out of 11, while Malta remained good value for money at the bottom of the league table. Tuition in France had become more expensive and Canada seemed cheaper, with average tuition costs falling from US$1,126 to US$907.
Top student nationalities were variable across the study destinations but Korean students made the top source country in five different countries in 2007. Saudi Arabian students, who were included in the top five student source countries for the USA and New Zealand in 2006, did not feature in the USA’s results in 2007 but instead were the third-most populous nationality for South African schools.
