Observations
Comparatively speaking, average length of stay for language courses was lower in 2008 than in 2007 (although we did use an updated assessment tool). The most dramatic drop recorded was experienced by UK providers, which saw average length of stay dip from 11.7 weeks to 6.9 weeks (see LTM, March 2009, page 64).
As for course costings, the UK became the most expensive study destination in 2008 (up from US$1,477 to US$1,623), surpassing Ireland where the average cost of a one-month course decreased from US$1,797 to US$1,599. South Africa, meanwhile, saw its comparative course cost dip to become the cheapest study destination (down from US$964 to US$573).
In terms of international student recruitment, all destinations cited agent usage as their most succesful method or recruitment, bar Italy, where a majority of bookings came from the Internet.
Nationality trends remained on a par with 2007’s results. Korean students continue to prove their commitment to language acquisition and featured as a top five source country for seven destinations. However, there were some interesting nuances in 2008. In the UK, Italian students were nipping at the heels of their Korean counterparts (each accounting for 12 per cent of the nationality breakdown), while France a market dominated by American students in 2007 saw an exclusively European top five.
