Observations

On average, students studying in Australia stayed longer, in terms of weeks, than any other surveyed destination in 2009. In fact, when compared with 2008 figures, international students were staying 2.4 weeks longer in Australia in 2009 (see LTM, March 2010, page 64). Most markets posted an incline in average length of stay, year on year, including Canada, the USA, South Africa, Spain and France while the UK registered the largest decline, which was only from 6.9 weeks to 6.2 weeks.

The UK remained the most expensive place to study in 2009, down from US$1,623 to US$1,619. Interestingly, of the 11 countries surveyed, eight in fact saw the cost of a one-month course, excluding accommodation, decrease, when prices were converted into US$. Australia experienced the biggest variation in price once prices were converted into US$, with prices dropping by US$307 year on year (but only AUS$137).

With the exception of the USA and Italy, working with study travel advisors was the most successful method of international student recruitment. New Zealand was the biggest advocate of student advisors, with 89 per cent of all student bookings stemming from this source in 2009.

Korea was a top-five provider country for seven of the 11 destinations profiled, compared with seven in 2008. The next most prevalent nationalities included Japanese, German and Brazilian.
