| • Fewer schools took part in this month’s Status Survey on Spain, which could well explain the drop in student numbers, 5,888 students compared with 9,903 in 2008.
• The number of students recruited via an agency was up from 43 per cent to 51 per cent in 2009. If, however, we look at this statistic based on the total number of students in the sample, as opposed to a school average this figure jumps up a further eight percentage points to 59 per cent.
• Spanish schools continued to aggressively market in Western Europe throughout 2009 (53 per cent compared with 70 per cent in 2008), however, a greater proportion of the marketing budget was allotted to Central & Eastern Europe last year (21 per cent compared with 11 per cent).
• Average length of stay fell from 4.9 to 3.5 weeks suggesting a preference for shorter courses. Length of stay ranged from one to 3.2 weeks, with the exception of one provider who noted a 16-week stay.
