What is Hothouse Media?

Publications
Language Travel Magazine started in 1990 as a quarterly, black & white publication for language travel agents and has grown into a monthly magazine going to over 100 countries. It is the only business-to-business magazine for the language and education travel industry; and it is an industry now, with an estimated annual turnover of $10 billion for the English language market alone.

Other sections in the magazine are Education Travel Magazine (which deals with higher and further education travel), and Work Wise (which covers the ever-changing work experience and internship market).

Your World on Monday is the latest news brought to you on the web every Monday www.hothousemedia.com/yourworld

Conferences
Alphe (Agents, Language Providers and Higher Education) was born in 1998 in London. It is a conference at which agents meet education providers face-to-face and since its establishment has hosted the annual industry leaders' meeting of the world ' s major associations, FELCA and GAELA. Alphes are now held worldwide in London, Bangkok, São Paulo, Tokyo, St. Petersburg, Seoul and Istanbul.

The Language Travel Magazine Star Awards, in which schools and agents vote for their business partners, is held during Alphe UK. Over 600 people attend this event and after the Awards ceremony, the dancing goes on into the night.

Those attending Alphes use a web-based programme called Meeting Manager to facilitate booking their face-to-face meetings. After an Alphe, attendees can maintain and strengthen their relationships by using InTouch, a web system in which each attendee builds up a community of partners who can access their latest news, special offers, prices, photos and gossip.

Who is Hothouse Media?

Sales
Sales Manager, Nicola Lutz, +44 (0)20 7440 4026, nicola@hothousemedia.com

I started work at Hothouse Media in 1995 after graduating from University with a degree in French and Spanish language. I work on the sales side of Language Travel Magazine, Education Travel and Work Wise and love it so much I've been here ever since! A great part of the job is the travel to workshops and conferences - there are so many fun people in this industry with great stories, what's not to love? After a fateful parachute jump (where I met my husband) we moved back to my Essex Girl roots. Most of my spare time is spent walking or cycling through fields with the kids (to country pubs usually!), camping, feeding my guilty Starbucks habit or beating my husband spectacularly at Monopoly.

Sales Executive, Nick Stevenson, +44 (0)20 7440 4029, nick@hothousemedia.com

Part of the HHM northern contingent, I am originally from Manchester and recently graduated from University in Leeds with a degree in Spanish and Management. At the weekend, I play rugby for my adopted local team, playing all around Surrey. A Manchester United fan, my other hobbies include ice cold beverages, workshop flirting, getting lost on my lunch break and general male vanity. I am keen to travel to wherever the company will send me, hopefully Latin America and Asia.

Sales Administrator, Annie Lorenzini, +44 (0)20 7440 4028, annie@hothousemedia.com

I moved to London in 2004 from my native Melbourne, Australia. I have had a wealth of change and experience whilst living in the UK from starting a small eco bags label, travelling, an art and design course and having a baby. It's now time to get back into publishing following a lengthy break from the office! When possible I enjoy making cupcakes with my daughter and decorating things from bags to walls to clothes, frequenting pubs, watching Come Dine With Me and Charlie Brooker.

Alphe Manager, Jane Gilham, +44 (0)20 7440 4027, jane@hothousemedia.com

I'm a scouser, from the blue half of Liverpool (ie. an Everton supporter), 2008 European Capital of Culture! After completing an English degree at Manchester University, I spent a year teaching English in France with my two great loves - cheese and wine - and of course my now husband, Tim. I then moved to London and have been working for HHM for the last seven years, now enjoying my role as Alphe Manager. It’s a really nice atmosphere to work in and HHM have built up a really good, hard-working and fun team which is great to be involved with. I love to travel both through work and on holiday and I am looking forward to the arrival of a mini me in February 2009.

Alphe Organiser, Stephanie Helliwell, +44 (0)20 7440 4037, stephanie@hothousemedia.com

A Yorkshire lass born and bred, I grew up in the north of England in West Yorkshire. After studying French with German at Aston University, Birmingham, I lived in France, Austria and Canada managing ski resorts for a UK tour operator. In between winter seasons I have worked in Sardinia, tried my hand at property developing and travelled around Central America. In my free time I am normally playing netball, hockey or tennis. As much as I love soaking up the sun on a beach, I would happily give up my summer holidays in order to spend a few weeks of the winter of skiing in the Alps!

Alphe Organiser, Emilie Giret, +44 (0)20 7440 4021, emilie@hothousemedia.com

Hi there! I take care of the agents for our Alphe workshops. Coming from a French background I actually grew up in southeast England but returned to France to do a degree in International Business and later on a degree in Tourism Management. After much soul searching in France, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Spain, I finally decided to go back to my roots and settle in sunny England! So here I am, enjoying every minute of it! Like most of the Alphe Team, I particularly enjoy travelling and learning new languages and on weekends you will most likely find me discovering new areas of London.

Alphe Organiser, Lucy Hall, +44 (0)20 7440 4025, lucy@hothousemedia.com

I’m a West Londoner born and bred (although my Dad’s American!) but have spread my wings to travel the full distance of the Central Line to East London where I now live. My working career spanning over 10 years has mainly been in events and marketing, in fields as diverse as financial markets to charity sports events – never a dull moment!  Having had a little time off to spend with my daughter Ruby who’s now at school, I’ve joined Hothouse Media to provide support to the Alphe Team and get back into the world of events, which I still love after 10 years. I’m a keen runner although my fondness for it was tested when I took part in the 2009 London Marathon. Somehow I still love it and have my sights firmly set on the New York Marathon next.

Editorial
Editor, Amy Baker, +44 (0)20 7440 4024, amy@hothousemedia.com

Originally from the west country, I studied Journalism at City University in London and spent a year in Bordeaux, France, before finding my dream job at Language Travel Magazine in 1997 (although I was originally turned down for the role!). Never happier than on a dance floor with friends, I also like travelling and scrabble! I've got a boyfriend, small child, half a house and half a king-size barbecue. And a bike that I have used twice.

Assistant Editor, Bethan Norris, +44 (0)20 7440 4022, bethan@hothousemedia.com

I was born and brought up in Bournemouth, so witnessed first hand the impact of the language travel industry from a very early age when competing for beach space with a range of matching backpacks. I have degrees in English and Environmental Conservation and briefly taught English in Russia in the 1990s. I have worked at Hothouse Media for over 10 years, despite leaving for a year to go travelling around Australia. I am a keen gardener and dream one day of having an enormous walled garden in the country. Until then I will have to make do with an allotment in a distinctly clayey area of South London.

Staff Journalist, Nicola Hancox, +44 (0)20 7440 4035, nicolahancox@hothousemedia.com

Born and raised in London (well, near Heathrow) I decided to go to university down by the sea (Exmouth, Devon). I graduated with a degree in English and Theatre & Performance Studies so I'm first on the dance floor, karaoke machine, doing the limbo etc. I've been at Hothouse since January 2007 and started out helping both the sales department (chasing copy and handling all the admin) and editorial (writing for LTM). However, as of January 2009 I'll be a fully-fledged member of the editorial team, passing on the sales baton to a new recruit. I took some time out to go travelling in 2005 and visited Australia, New Zealand and the USA. I'm currently brushing up on my Spanish so hope to test it out on some clients in the not so distant future. I enjoy beer, crap reality television, fish finger sandwiches and hate running.

Art
Graphic Designer, Willy Lamers, +44 (0)20 7440 4032, willy@hothousemedia.com

I was born and grew up on the Dutch countryside but soon realised that farming wasn't the right thing for me. I took degrees in Graphic Design in the Netherlands and in the UK and enjoyed an internship in Netherlands Antilles. Before starting my job here at Hothouse Media in August 2007 I travelled around South America and tried to expand my Spanish vocabulary. Besides design and travelling, I also enjoy film, photography, live music, dinner parties, cycling....and spending time in that lovely Dutch countryside.

Accounts
Accountant, Fang Yan, +44 (0)20 7440 4031, fang@hothousemedia.com

I was born and raised in China and graduated with a degree in economics and statistics from Beijing. I lived in Singapore during 1999 and 2000, and moved to London in 2000 and have been here ever since. I've been at Hothouse Media since November 2001. In my spare time, I enjoy swimming, reading, practising yoga, and spend most of my time taking my son to different lessons during weekend.

Directors
Scott Wade, +44 (0)20 7440 4030, scott@hothousemedia.com

I was born and educated in Australia, taking degrees in economics and accounting. I've worked with Hothouse Media since 1992, having been a corporate banker in my previous life. I speak some French and Spanish and have spent a lot of time holidaying in Latin America. I enjoy cycling, theatre, film, beer, poker, going to the gym and on the weekend you'll likely find me on the golf course.

Stephen Roberts, +44 (0)20 7440 4023, stephen@hothousemedia.com

I was born and raised near Brighton in the UK, with various periods living in Blackpool and Manchester as a boy. The latter being the reason for my love of all things United! I have spent most of my adult life in London and the city is currently what I refer to as home when asked. I find describing where Redbourn is to an agent from Timbuktu... or wherever... a bit of a chore and to be honest not that mutually fruitful. You're most likely to meet me at an Alphe... usually at the bar with a Jack ‘n coke in hand. When not working... I'm sleeping in my Man Utd pyjamas.
