The Many Languages, One World – Essay Competition invites students to write a 2,000-word essay in a non-native language and in one of the UN’s six official languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish.

ELS will award ten winners from each language group with a five-day all-expenses-paid trip to New York, where they will attend a conference at Adelphi University and conduct a youth forum at the United Nations Headquarters.

Mark Harris, CEO and President of ELS, said, “The role of the UN is the role of every global citizen, which is to make peace and to look at ways to enhance the qualities of life, health and spiritual fulfilment of peoples around the world through common understanding and through language.

” The deadline for essay submissions is February 21, 2014. Participating students must be 18 years of age or older and currently enrolled in a full-time programme of study at an Academic Impact member institution and should explore how multilingual ability advances global citizenship and understanding.
