Australia’s Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) has announced that the Toefl iBT and Pearson PTE Academic language tests will now be accepted as evidence of language proficiency for a wider range of visa categories.

The two tests, which have been accepted for student visa applications since 2011, will be accepted for most streams within the temporary graduate, skilled, work and holiday, and former resident visa programmes from November 2014.

The expansion of accepted English language tests gives visa applicants alternatives to Ielts and the Occupational English Test (OET), which will still be accepted.

The Toefl and Pearson tests are not yet eligible for the Temporary Work (Skilled) 457 visa, which is currently undergoing an independent review, DIBP confirmed. The authority has published a full list of visa streams that the tests are now accepted for.

“ETS is delighted to take up this wonderful opportunity to expand our services in the Australian market beyond the higher education sector,” said David Payne, Vice President, Global Education Division at ETS, which administers the Toefl test. “With the Toefl now accepted across the visa continuum, Australia becomes an even more appealing skills and knowledge destination for people seeking education or to make an able contribution.”

Earlier this year, DIBP said that it was satisfied with the performance of Toefl and Pearson PTE in a review of their operation in student visa stream since 2011.
