Q. What is Work Experience UK’s main role? Who are its members? When was it established?
Work Experience UK’s (WeUK) main role is to promote the UK as the leading destination in the world to obtain quality work experience programmes. We have 26 members, all language schools and members of English UK. Membership is limited to English UK members but this may change in the future. We were founded in 2006.

Q. What activities has the association been involved in lately to further the interests of work experience providers?
We are involved in working on the consultation for the new points-based visa system with the government, improving international links with colleges abroad for Leonardo programmes and British Council offices around the world, [and] working with the government for a mission to Columbia for Work Experience UK members in the autumn.

Q. How do you think this particular sector of the travel abroad industry will grow in the near future?
There was just Twin and Trident involved in work placement activities 12 years ago. Now, two-thirds of English UK members are offering work experience programmes. Regulations such as the minimum wage, labour laws and visas have enabled Work Experience UK to promote work experience as a valid part of language travel to the UK.

UNPAID WORK IN IRELAND

International students are realising the potential of unpaid work experience placements in ireland. Teamed with the practical benefits of speaking english outside the foreign language classroom, much is to be gained in terms of skills for the cv as well.

The demand for work in ireland has not gone unnoticed by language schools and many Language schools now have a range of work options on offer.
