Fascinating reading in a recent copy of Education Guardian revealed the international bias at UK higher education institutions. While there is a mix of many international students across the UK it turns out that particular nationalities tend to favour certain institutions. For example, nearly nine per cent of all Japanese students go to the University of the Arts in London ostensibly because interviews for its courses are held in Osaka and Tokyo.
In 2006/2007, almost 10 per cent of all Spanish students chose the North East Wales Institute in Wrexham, which has just 7,300 students. This is because of its links with three universities in Spain, apparently. This is testament to the power of individual relationships and unique ideas, I think. One person from Wrexham may have travelled to Spain and built relationships, and the payoff is clear.
