“Last week, the results of the Baird Review were published in Australia and a number of recommendations were given to improve the country’s international education industry. One that caught my eye immediately, and is currently being implemented by the Australian government, is the requirement that all language schools declare to their students how much commission they pay to agents. This seems to me a very sensitive area to schools, as agents will be able to find out how much their rivals get paid by the same school. So far, however, Australian language schools have been quiet on the issue and Sue Blundell from English Australia said that she was waiting to get feedback on this from members. One way out for schools could be to publish the average percentage paid to all agents, but will this satisfy the powers that be? Further information regarding the implementation of this ruling is needed.”
